AC Milan v Arsenal - Tuesday March 4, 7.45pm - San Siro

And the time has finally come to open the official AC Milan match thread. We still have to play United in the FA Cup, but this match thread had to be started well in advance, as it could prove historic, just like the Real Madrid one was.

Most people will remember the last time we played a team from Milan in a competitive tournament (no, the Emirates Cup doesn't count!). It was in the Champions League of 2003/2004, and it was arguably one of the greatest days in the history of our club. We had to win by 3 clear goals at the San Siro against Inter, and things were looking tough, even at half time. An out of this world 2nd time performance saw us score some trademark Arsenal goals, which settled the score at 1-5 to the Arsenal after the final whistle.

Unfortunately, past glories aren't worth a thing in this tie, and we need to make sure that the first great European night at Ashburton Grove, also known as Arsenal Stadium if the UEFA rules are worth anything. For one night, it will be again a true football ground, and for one night, us fans have to ensure that the team's 12th man is well heard.

We can all look back to our triumphs against Villarreal and Real Madrid as the last great European nights in Highbury, and hopefully this one will be our first great victory at home since moving grounds.

The latest updates from UEFA are the following:

UEFA.com said:
Blackburn scalp sends Arsenal clear

Goals at the start and the finish of the match earned Arsenal FC a 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers FC which extended their lead in the Premier League to five points.

Arsène Wenger's men enjoyed the perfect opening at the Arsenal Stadium when Philippe Senderos rose unattended to head in a fourth-minute corner. The north London club were in a position to enhance a two-point advantage over second-placed Manchester United FC, and they made sure of the win as the game entered stoppage time. Aleksandr Hleb played the ball into the feet of Emmanuel Adebayor who finished adroitly past Blackburn goalkeeper Brad Friedel. It was Adebayor's 19th league goal of the season. Hleb had hit the post earlier in the second half, while half-chances for Roque Santa Cruz and Benni McCarthy could not prevent a first top-flight defeat of 2008 for ninth-placed Blackburn.

Milan resume Moscow dream

Holders AC Milan are one of 16 teams three rounds away from the UEFA Champions League final as Europe's leading club competition resumes next week.

Moscow dream
Having won the trophy for a seventh time by beating Liverpool FC last season, Carlo Ancelotti's Milan will look to edge towards an eighth crown when they visit Arsenal FC for a first-leg tie on 20 February. "Reaching Moscow is a dream and we have the potential to make it happen," said Ancelotti, whose side last claimed back-to-back European Champion Clubs' Cups in 1989 and 1990. Arsenal will not be daunted, though, having reached the 2006 final. This year's showpiece takes place in Moscow on 21 May.

Madrid juggernaut
Meanwhile, the first knockout round begins on 19 February with five-time winners Liverpool hosting Milan's neighbours FC Internazionale Milano. AS Roma have the daunting task of trying to derail Real Madrid CF, still the competition's most successful team with nine wins to date. Tuesday's action also sees the only remaining Bundesliga side, FC Schalke 04, take on sole Portuguese survivor FC Porto, and Greece's Olympiacos CFP entertain Chelsea FC.

Glasgow showdown
In addition to the Arsenal-Milan encounter, Wednesday's programme also has Celtic FC welcoming FC Barcelona to Glasgow. Celtic manager Gordon Strachan will want his men to rise to the occasion against the 1992 and 2006 winners. "We've got a young squad, some had never played European football until this year, and they'll look forward to the game," Strachan said.

Lyon test
Elsewhere, Olympique Lyonnais – who snatched their last-16 place by winning at Rangers FC on Matchday 6 - will attempt to defy another Scotsman as they receive Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United FC. UEFA Cup holders Sevilla FC will seek to extend their first European Cup campaign at the expense of fellow knockout-stage debutants Fenerbahçe SK, starting in Istanbul. The second leg of Wednesday's matches will be played on 4 March, with Tuesday's ties concluding a day later - with the exception of Liverpool's game at Inter, scheduled for 11 March.

It is refreshing, at least, that we will have to play one of the world's giants this time around. After the disastrous results against PSV, it's fair to say that we were all left wanting for more in the Champions League. That night was the last time we saw Thierry Henry "playing", or at least trying to play for the Arsenal in the Champions League. He was brought on to save the day, but couldn't make a mark, and we were knocked out by the better team.

It's time to forget that horrible afternoon, and focus in the great group of youngsters that lead the Premiership table. The hunger for glory should inspire them to kill the old Italian Dinosaur. It is time for our lads to stand up and be counted, and show the world that we can better the effort ManUtd put last year in the semi-finals.

On a final note, I'm going to be optimistic with the team I'm putting out. It is important to remember, however, that if the last few years are anything to go by, we could in all likeliness play a 4-5-1 formation.

Holy cr*p!

A truly fantastic intro to the thread RC8; well befits the stature and possible, to use your words, "historic" nature of this match. Kudos.

PS We'll win by some sort of aggregate....

its finally time to start taking this thread seriously. im not sure im ready for it; having such a large gap in between cl ties just makes for too big a build up. although im sure thats the point.

Isn't this match thread a little premature with the small matter of Man United away coming up first? Unless I have had a brain fart and completely missed it in Arsenal Talk.

I am confident that we can advance and some will say that we are possibly the favourites aswell. Our approach at San Siro will be decisive.
