Mourinho's signings havent been great imo, most of the players who are winning them games were signed by Ranieri - Gallas, Lampard, Duff, Robben, Cech and Makelele were all signed by Ranieri. Also Terry was there before Mourinho. But he has the tactical knowledge and man management skills That Ranieri lacked.

The structure and backbone of the team was already there and established before Mourinho came. He only really brought a couple of players with him who knew how he wanted things. Players who could help him get his message across on the pitch. A manager can explain things a million times in the dressing room, but it doesn't always work out on the pitch. Having those players with him who know how he works helps the transition to the pitch become more smooth.

But surely the players that he spent 70 odd million on in the Summer would be expected to do more than they have so far.
