Holocaust, LGBT and terrorist campaigning is okay. But defending an entire people of a religion being killed in China is 'politics'. Just shows that when money is involved, nothing else matters.

Hopefully, this fuels a movement amongst footballers. Sadly when it does, Arsenal will be known in history as the club that backed this atrocity.

Arsenal, if they were such wussies, should have kept their mouth shut. Instead, they've disgraced themselves.

This is much bigger than Özil bro, this is huge institutions in the West kowtowing to an authoritarian regime because they're afraid of effecting their bottom line. It's no different to Netflix allowing themselves to be censored by Saudi Arabia.
Yes but western powers are almost always fine with authoritarianism if they are making money from it. Nothing new here, but it’s still pathetic. Our world is ****.

Yeah, you’re right. Özil is definitely the bad guy compared to the repressive Chinese government and Arsenals craven capitalist owners who cozy up to them.
Nobody said he was the bad guy. However he did have options on this, and deciding he'd use his status as Famous Arsenal player, was an error. The club have acted consistently and for that reason should be totally exempt from criticism. Why aren't they?

What do you think of Özil picking and choosing when to be outraged by persecution?

I think it's a lot better than not being outraged at all. @celestis is right, he'll have to confront his views on Erdogan at some point, but people ****ting on Özil for doing the right thing in this instance are telling on themselves.

What the club have/ haven't done is by the by, they are just a football club and would be wise to stay out of politics and guide their employees to do the same. If they commented on every political problem in the world they would never please everyone and would deserve criticism for one reason or another. They would also lose a ton of money just like they have today because of one man's conceitedness, vanity and brazen ambition to go into politics in Turkey after his playing career. Any other profession where you lose that sort of money for your employer by your actions and you would be sacked. This is current and future earnings as this now has a knock on effect in China. Waiting for this mythical Özil magic in the city game but he has barely touched the ball for some reason (perhaps go win it like De Bruyne or even Foden would?) and we are 2 nil down. Here's hoping.
