Player ratings - West Ham vs Arsenal

Mannone: 7 - Put himself about, didn't hesitate, and pulled off some great saves.

Jenkinson: 8 - Good crossing, surging runs with the ball, and solid in defense.

Gibbs: 7 - Linked up well with Poldi, and solid in defense. Clearly a much better defender than Santos.

Mertesacker: 8 - Good interceptions, solid positions, and saved our blushed by holding up that "certain" Hammers' goal. Couldn't beat Carrol in the air, but then again, who can?

Vermaelen: 7 - More solid defensive performance than his last couple of games. He still bombed forward, but not in gung ho fashion. Also, wasn't reckless in the challenge.

Arteta: 8 - Shielded our back four well, and was instrumental in retaining our ball possession. Made more passes than anyone (except perhaps Cazorla).

Ramsey: 6 - Decent going forward, but terrible defensively. Should have made a challenge instead of being burned for the goal.

Cazorla: 9 (MotM) - Brilliant vision, passing, hold up play, and goal. The finish would make Ronaldo jealous.

Gervinho: 6 - Worked hard and made some decent runs. Final ball was not up to scratch today.

Podolski: 7 - Great defensive shift, linked up with Gibbo, and cut inside for some deadly shots. Unlucky not to have scored.

Giroud: 8 - Excellent off the ball runs. Great first time shots, and clearly a well taken poacher's goal that Ian Wright would be proud of.

--

Santos: 6 - Great going forward, but gambled in his tackling. Good in the wing-back role. Not so much as a full-back.

Walcott: 8 - Vintage stuff from Theo. Classic push-and-run to exploit his made asset. Wonderfully placed finish with accuracy and weight. Also, strong in the dribble and showed tenacity to set up Santi.

Koscielny: 6 - Decent. It was good to see Kozza, Merte, and Vermaelen in a back 3. I wish we would play 3 at the back with 2 wing-backs more often...kind of like West Ham of old!

Think Jaguar is a little generous with his ratings in defence, but pretty much agree with his midfield/attack. Maybe a 4 or 5 for Gervinho who looked awful imo.

@Fabo: Yeah, it's like Gerv is a completely different player when on the flank.

@Falcon: Good point, forgot about Wenger :D : 7 - Tactics were right, and substitutions made sense instead of being WTF?

Mannone - 7, Did better than expected today, came out and punched the ball away a fair few times. The goal was un-savable.

Jenkinson - 6, Not a bad performance by any means, but still one of his worst so far this season. Crossing was poor and should really have done more to help Ramsey for their goal.

Mertesacker - 7, Pretty comfortable for him, did very little wrong. Made a game changing challenge on Nolan at 1-1.

Vermaelen - 7, Again, like Mertesacker, did nothing wrong.

Gibbs - 6, Easily his worst performance so far this season. Crossing was wild and he seemed out of position a lot defensively. Hope he's not badly injured.

Ramsey - 7, Did good, worked hard to win the ball back numerous times and his passing was good too (93 completed passes, 90% accuracy, 4 key passes).

Arteta - 8, Another day at the office for Mikel. Excellent passing (111 completed passes, 95% accuracy, 2 key passes), and great defensively. Nothing new to see here.

Cazorla - 9(MOTM), Simply sensational. Majestic display in the middle of the park which was topped off by a superb goal. The way he creates space is amazing and some of his passes were unbelievable, particularly the one for Giroud towards the end, who should have scored. Could have 6-7 assists in the league already if strikers would take the chances he makes.

Gervinho - 5, Poor from him today, didn't really get in the game.

Giroud - 8, Great performance, deserved his goal and played a perfectly weighted ball for Walcott to score. His movement to create space for other players is really good.

Podolski - 7, Not involved as much as I'd like him to be, but played in a great cross for Giroud to score and works so hard up and down the line.

Subs:

Walcott - 8, Made a real difference. Great finish and did well to keep the ball and set up Cazorla for our 3rd. He may have just played himself into the team for the next game.

Santos - 7, Despite coming on after an hour, he made more tackles than anyone else in the team bar Arteta. Didn't do anything wrong.

Koscielny - N/A, Wasn't on the pitch long enough to rate him.

Vito 6 some good saves need to work with the aerial balls carroll nearly beat him. he is good shot stopper by the way.

Gibbs 6.5 another decent game from him defensively, but so bad offensively need to work on his crosses waste too many crosses today.

Tv5 6.5 better then last game seemed focus.

BFG 7 another decent game from him.

Jenko 7 a decent game defensively he keeping improving nice to see.

Arteta 7 a old arteta returned controlled the midfield and his passes perfect

ramsey 6.5 the diame goal was his fault but he had good game in my opinion.

Cazorla 8 such classy player and what a goal great game from him but badly need a rest i dont want he get injured.

Gervinho 5.5 a very bad game from him he looked useless on the wings today.

Giroud 8 my man of the match he worked very hard today a great finish for his goal and lovely pass to theo on the 2nd goal and of course his movements are just prefect.

Poldi 7 decent game from him and had great assist gibbs should take a note how to cross balls from poldi.

Subs:

Waclott 8 a really super sub today goal and an assist in just 20 min well done theo now sign new contract.

Santos 6 He drive when he want haha the arsenal fans sing when he came on today a decent game from him

Kosh the boss N/A he didn't have too many minutes to make me rate him.

Mannone- 7- Assured performance, and a good save on Taylor near the end (although any Prem keeper should make that save).

Gibbs- 5- Crossing was awful, although I think he had the thigh problem a while before he was actually subbed out. Hope he's ok, we need him.

Mertesacker- 6- Great tackle at the end, but Carroll had his way. Won every header against him. I know Carroll's tough and most people can't do much with him, but Per should still do better. Otherwise, he read the game well as usual.

Vermaelen- 7- Looked pretty good.

Jenkinson- 6- Terrible defending for the goal, but otherwise he was a rock. Not as good a game going forward as we've seen recently but he did fine I thought.

Arteta- 8- Another day at the office.

Ramsey- 6- He did a lot of good things and a lot of bad things, including whatever he was doing on their goal. Got better and better as the game went on though.

Cazorla- 9- AMAZING goal, tons of great passes, really opened them up every time they stopped parking the bus.

Podolski- 7.5- Worked very hard and gave Giroud a great cross without a lot of space. I wish the team would pass it to him a little more tbh.

Gervinho- 5.5- Pretty anonymous

Giroud- 8- Very solid game, great finish for the goal. He's an excellent player, but he does need to produce like he did today to be in the starting lineup.

SUBS

Santos- 6- His defensive positioning is criminal at times, but it didn't make a huge difference today thankfully. He has a great tackle though.

Walcott- 8.5- Made things happen when he stepped on the pitch. Superb finish as well.

Mannone - 6 - Decent, a bit shaky in the air.
Gibbs - 5 - Had a bit of an off day it seemed.
Verm - 7 - He was our best defender today.
Per - 6 - Did OK, but he has showed this season that he can do better.
Jenkinson - 6 - Was at fault at the 1-0.
Arteta - 7 - Another stable, faultless performance.
Ramsey - 6 - He's still very inconsistent in that CM role.
Santi - 8 - No explanation needed.
Podolski - 7 - Should be involved more, but did good with and without the ball.
Giroud - 8 - His best game of the season by a mile.
Gervinho - 5 - Never looked dangerous.

Santos - 6 - He did what you can expect from a player who played his second game in two months.
Walcott - 7 - He made optimal use of his pace and scored a very important goal.

Mannone - 6

Least he didn't fack up.

Jenkinson - 6.5

Nice and solid, but left his crossing boots at home.

Gibbs - 6

See Jenkinson, but a bit worse.

Mertesacker - 6.5

Nice and composed, but got trashed by Carroll in the air.

Vermaelen - 6.5

Solid and unspectacular.

Ramsey - 6.5

Nice little twists and turns, solid passing, clearly needs time to develop his defensive nous.

Arteta - 7

Controlled the game well, as usual.

Cazorla - 7.5

Actually thought he was less of a threat with the final ball than usual, but still kept possession very well and scored a fine goal.

Gervinho - 5

Largely invisible.

Podolski - 7

Good cross, good work rate as usual.

Giroud - 8

A threat all day with his movement and physicality, and a nice through ball too.

Mannone - 6 - goal was unsaveable but Carrol miss was a lucky moment for him
Gibbs - 5 - Worst defender (player) today. Crossing was way off
Verm - 6 - Made several walk about moments at 1-1. Could have cost us. Need more concentration
Per - 7 - Had several important blocks i.e When Nolan was free in our box with Carrol.
Jenkinson - 7 - kept Jarvis out from the game several good crosses but failed to deal with Diame
Arteta - 7 - Our most important player ran the show again
Ramsey - 6 - was at fault for the goal but good game overall and nice long range shots
Santi - 8 - Mastermind, but expecting him to head a cross is just too much
Podolski - 7 - great game
Giroud - 7.5 - created a goal and assist from nothing, eat your pies haters
Gervinho - 5 - Look tired
Santos - 6 - nice interception, a good through ball might cause problem though
Walcott - 7 - yes you are not Messi, keep it simple and score like today

Overall kudos for West Ham it could have ended differently

Mannone 6: Some good saves, terrible in the air though and poor distribution. Still, decent game from him.
Jenkinson 7: solid defensively for the most part, could imporve his crossing.
Vermaelen 6: strugled with carrol
Per 6: same as vermaelen
Gibbs 5: Shocking crossing really, needs to improve. Gets into good advanced positions though.
Arteta 7: thought he had a bit of an off game, lots of late clumsy challenges but solid in possession as usual.
Ramsey 6: Not too bad for being ramsey I guess, does some good things and some bad things, not good defensively. Got absolutely mugged for their goal.
Cazorla 9: Immense performance by him. Amazing technique and ability to keep the ball, some great passes and a great goal to top it off.
Gervinho 5: Rather poor, I noticed he seemed to have his head up and look for our other players mroe this game though so that was good at least.
Podolski 7: Not his best game, needs to get involved a bit more. Good cross for giroud and some good attempted shots though.
Giroud 8: Much improved. Good movement, gets into scoring positions a lot. Good goal, good pass for theo on the 2nd. Still looks a bit clumsy on the ball though and needs to be more clinical, but hopefully that'll come. Battled well with the west ham defence.

Theo 7: Good and vital goal.
Santos 6: Meh

Surely trying to make the challenge is what he did wrong, should have just stood off and contained Diame. Jenkinson was about to come and help him as well.

That would have worked to. The choice was actually two-fold: 1) Successfully make the challenge; or 2) successfully hold up Diame. Either would have prevented the goal, and would have acceptable. Instead he elected to pull off his Denilson impression, allowing the attacker to breeze past him.

Quite Sure he challenge and got nut-megged. After that, he had to let go as Diame has enter the penalty box.

Therefore he violated option 1 stated above. If he attempted to tackle and got nut-megged, then he failed to successfully challenge him. Alternatively stated, if he had successfully challenged Diame, he would not have got nut-megged.

well, there's no arguing about that theory...
well, what's done is done. that's defenders (and GK) game right there, one split-second decision mistake and BAM...

It wasn't a nutmeg. If you look closely, Ramsey had his feet together just as Diame poked the ball past him. Similar to the skill Song did vs. Dortmund for RvP's goal if you guys remember. Almost like a "reverse nutmeg" if you'll indulge me ;D
