Almunia did very well - 9 MOTM
Gallas, Toure - woeful, terrible defending for the goal. - 4.5
Midfield - same old crap, 4
Van Persie - ineffective 5

Don't let the ratings fool you though. I loved tonight !

Almunia - 8 Like the rest of this season, he played well and inspires confidence

Sagna - 5 One of his worst games, but Vucinic is a very good player who was abusing all of our defenders
Gallas - 4.5 He flicked his foot out and then pulled it back....Do they do the hokey-pokey in England? I have watched the goal 10 times and still can't understand what he was doing.
Touré - 7.5 Was partly at fault for the goal, but it was mostly Gallas. Other than that, though, I thought he played a great game.
Clichy - 6 Very uneven....I think he deserves less abuse than he has received for his performance. He did make an unbelievable number of interceptions

Eboue - 5.5 Typical Eboue performance without the diving, though.
Diaby - 5 Was dire attacking-wise. But he did break up some of the play and made some nice tackles. Holding the ball too long (has anyone noticed this...lol).
Denilson - 5.5 It isn't his fault that he is not good enough or strong enough. It is Wenger's fault that a squad player of Denilson's talent level is playing every game.
Nasri - 4.5 Was quite poor. Held onto the ball too long, yet with no attacking intent.
Bendtner - 7.5 Had a pretty good game. Doesn't make up for the first leg by any means!

RVP - 4 Made some poor decisions. But what really steams me is that our only chance to score (considering how bad we were) was from a set piece. And his deliveries ranged from OK to horrid. Is he not concentrating? Or is his ball-striking ability that overrated?

Walcott - 5 Brought on against a tired, old team for a single purpose.....to run at them. He did it sometimes, but chose not to on many other occasions. Was this his fault or Wenger's?
Eduardo - 4.5 Played quite poorly....but I love him anyway. It will be a long long time before I criticize him. I thought Wenger should have started him, but I was wrong.

We really, really, really miss Cesc. I am already fantasizing about next season's squad. I know it must be fantasy as Rosicky isn't injured. In this fantasy there few automatic choices (Cesc, Clichy, Sagna, Arshavin) and everyone else must fight for their position because we have actual depth.

I don't hide from praising players that I am not keen on, either. The first thing I mentioned after the 1st leg was how good Denilson was. He infuriated me today, though. So did the whole team, but moreso him and RVP.

I've been a fan of RvP for some time, and normally I've seen reasons to defend him when he's been critizised. Not because I thhought he always played well, but that it looked like he was quality waiting to happen if he could straighten out a few things. Yesterday I couldn't see that, and I have to assume something is wrong. being a isolated lone striker is probably tough, but he still had opportunities to do something with the ball. And what happened to his set pieces? They were as bad as I've ever seen them.

After a horribly poor game on our behalf, I still can't help thinking this will be a major change for Arsenal. I'm picturing the lads on the flight home from Rome right after midnight.. What a feeling it must be to have advancement in the bag!! What an experience that must be for players like Denilson, Bendtner and Diaby. And Almunia the hero. Cheers Al!

I am not one to really challenge how one come up with ratings, since I never post up ratings of my own, but may I ask why some of you give Gallas "average" or even midly positive ratings? His blunder was bailed out only by a penalty shootout which he himself did not participate in. Would the numbers have been different if we lost?

(On an somewhat relevant note, for all of Gallas's talk of mental strength and leadership from experience, he showed neither when he wasn't even the 8th to take the penalty. For a person whose career started out as a striker, he has absolutely no grounds to say he doesn't know how to strike the ball. Letting kids like Denilson and Diaby take the penalty kicks before him is rank hypocrisy.)

Maybe training established that penalties are not Gallas' specialty?

If so, the same training would have prescribed using the last remaining substitution to put on another taker, or he should have requested Wenger to take him off.

We only had Almunia, Clichy, and Gallas left who didn't take shots. Thankfully I never needed to know whether Almunia would before Gallas or vice versa.

Before the penalties started there was a shot of Sagna comforting Gallas. Did anyone else see this? Gallas was sitting on the grass and looked really upset.

I'm thinking Gallas thought he could do it, but Wenger's thought that the pressure might be too much for him, and can you imagine the backlash he'd get after what happened with the captaincy if he missed his penalty and knocked us out of the Champions League?

Gallas looked rattled after the goal I thought. I did fully expect him to take a penalty though, he can strike the ball and he's the most senior member of the team. I thought the same things as sesquioxide last night TBH. Would Gallas have taken a pen if still captain?

It was good Gallas didn't have to shoot a penalty, because he would have had so much pressure, if he misses imagine the hatred towards him by those who already hate him. He would have been booed more than Eboue, I guess.

Same as nearly everyone else who took a pen really.

Thinking about it, true. I said before nearly every penalty that 'if he misses, he is going to be no. 1 enemy at the Emirates'. But then, Gallas gets even more hate than others (excluding Eboue), doesn't he?
