Sebastian Svard: 2004/05 Loan Update

In September 2004 Sebastian Svard went on a loan deal back to his native Denmark with powerhouse Danish side Brøndby IF. The Dane would be going on his third loan-spell after joining Arsenal in 2002. First, Svard returned to Denmark to play, on loan with Brøndby's rivals FC Copenhagen, and then again last season the Danish midfielder spent considerable amount of time on loan at Division 1 (otherwise known as "The Championship") side Stoke City.

This loan spell with Brøndby has been rather anonymous for Svard, similar to when he was on loan at FC Copenhagen a year or so ago. The midfielder hasn't made much of a difference when he's had the chance of playing either. Brøndby fans have become frustrated with his lacklustre performances when given a chance, however they realise he has never played top-flight or competitive football at a significant level in his career before, so they are being patient with Svard. He has spent the majority of his career playing reserve team football for Arsenal, after all.

Svard has been involved in fifteen matches this season for Brøndby. The majority of his appearances, however, have come as a substitute – Brøndby have only started him a handful of times in their quest to recapture the Danish Superliga title.

He has been in the starting line-up the last two of Brøndby's matches. Both were the two Royal League matches against IFK Gothenburg of Sweden and FC Copenhagen of Denmark- but only because of fellow midfielder Kim Daugaard being absent through injury. In the match against IFK he had an indifferent game; however the entire Brøndby team were disappointing against the Swedish outfit. Svard's performance against Copenhagen was an improved one; however he still wasn't up-to-scratch, even for the Danish league.

He still has 6 months left with the Danish club. The spring awaits and he probably won't be anything more than a reserve-player at Brøndby - just as he was at Arsenal. The future for Svard at Arsenal is obviously not a bright one, and a once promising midfielder will most likely be sold to whoever is interested in his services.

The problem for Svard at Brøndby is that he has to compete with a several really good players for one of the two defensive midfielder spots in the line-up - Martin Retov, who's been one of Brøndby's very best players this season, and Kim Daugaard, who's been equally great and last but not least Morten Wieghorst, who's returned from a long term injury.

Furthermore there's the injured Stefan Schmidt, who hasn't played since the season-opener in August due to a knee-injury suffered against Viborg. Wieghorst and Schmidt have both been out the entire season and will probably be ready to resume playing when the Danish league restarts in the springtime, next year.

Arsenal Quotes

When I am asked why I stayed at Arsenal so long.. my answer is simple; I never wanted to be anywhere else. I could have earned a lot more elsewhere, but that wouldn't compensate for all the good years at Highbury.
