And yet, against West Ham he was rightly lauded for his performance.
Nah not by me. Thought he was pathetic all match and the cross covered both his and Song's performances.

The problem is that we cant give Clichy a break every now and then because Gibbs is always out injured. Sagna is being rested all the time unlike Clichy.

Only this season has Sagna been "rested" for Eboue, partly due to Wenger's hand being forced not to include Eboue anywhere else on the pitch.

Clichy is not a bad LB, but is far from world-class. Luck is as much a part of the game as ability for a player and unfortunately for us, luck does not seem to side with Clichy when he makes a mistake. He has been afforded the luxury of being unchallenged for the position since Cole's departure in 2006. He has not noticeably improved in the last 2 seasons, which admittedly have been hampered by injuries, but his poor decision-making has been evident rather than rustiness in execution. While he still has time on his side, he displays no outstanding quality either defensively (or offensively which can compensate in the current game). I don't think Gibbs is ready for the spot so I think the best option would be to bring in a specialist LB to compete for it. If Clichy comes out best, then well done, but he has been our LB through default for several years now and has to perform consistently at a level consistent with ambitions of winning silverware.

Eboue's stock is falling lower and lower. His form has been affected by his "utility" status in previous seasons meaning his lack of game time at RB has seen his effectiveness seriously diminish. You would hope that prior experience would be more evident in his performances at RB, even if we don't expect him to be at his former level. However his contribution both defensively and offensively have been dire. If he is to stay at the club on merit, he needs to pull his finger out. Another performance like yesterday and Nordveidt should get a chance to deputise for Sagna.

That's exactly what I thought yesterday. What if Clichy is injured? Gibbs is unavailable, Traore is elsewhere. If we are forced to play Eboue as LB, then Sagna would have to play every game as well as we do not have another RB backup.

Eboue is just awful these days. Clichy needs to stop fannying about.

To be honest though, I felt nothing from the loss. Went in to the game thinking we wouldnt get more than a point in a game that was virtually pointless.

It's easy to use Clichy as a scapegoat for the performance last night. The mistake he made was inexcusable, however, the problem was bigger than that. It was a makeshift team and therefore we must be objective (impossible I would say..)about the final result. However, I think that the way we lost was so much like previous bad away performances in the CL that you wonder if the SQUAD has learnt anything?

1. Cut out the silly mistaks-WTF was Clichy thinking. WTF!

2. Make use of your opportunity to cross the ball into opponents area-when oh when we will learn this simple but important task!

3. Someone needs to take responsibility in and around the box! We did not make positive enough decisions in the final 1/3-heard that before??

4. Play to your strengths. Why oh why did we not try to get Theo isolated against the left back more often. Why was Nasri not more instrumental in developing our attacking play?

5. Eboue is useful in a strong team. However, in a weakened unit he is a headless chicken that does not offer enough attacking or defensive nous!

6. Wenger talks about us being an intelligent team! well there was nothing intelligent about that result. In fact, just the opposite-an intelligent team would have found a way to salvage a result!

A winning team does not lose that match full stop!

On a positive note-Wilshere is the real thing and players like him can drive us forward. He is up for the big game.

I wholeheartedly disagree. It was a wasted opportunity to show that our squad depth was of the necessary caliber to take on anybody, anytime , anywhere. Take something from that game and we qualify. We also lost in a manner that smacks of Groundhog day! Mistakes, naivete and impotence.

Very disappointed with the display. The goals conceded highlighted how poor the team is defensively. i couldnt understand why eastmond is the closest defender to Chygrynskiy for the first goal. Clichy again messed up for the 2nd goal, but even after that we should never have been in a situation where they had 4 attackers against 3 defenders. There were countless occasions where Shakhtar would break and outnumber us. If they could get men forward why couldn't we get bodies back? Personally i dont think Bendtner is good enough. I have seen too many away games where he fails to hold the ball up. For a player of his size, he should do much more when protecting the ball.
On a brighter note i thought Walcott took his goal really really well.

The Clichy problem isnt limited to this game , he has been losing concentration in games for a while now and its not only for us , he has been culpable in games for France as well. Its really worrying, cant imagine nutty or cashley being caught out like how he was yesterday. Appalling defending by him, sometimes a player just has to whack the ball away and play it safe, i mean we were under the cosh abit and close to half time. Was just absolutely the wrong time to dally on the ball, if ever there was a time anyway.
Unfortunately for us , we'll have to stick with him since Gibbs got injured but someone has to tell him his days are numbered if he keeps it up. A new LB in January aybe?

With Clichy in the past he could gain some sympathy for not having the greatest protection around him, as has been mentioned in various other threads that Arshavin though lethal and productive in the final third can be a weak link in the middle & defensive areas of the pitch. Against Shakhtar however we had Nasri in front of Clichy, who made a major contribution of getting back there and helping out with Theo & Bendtner given the opportunity to be our most forward threats. Shaktar pressed us hard like warriors right from the front, closing us down with little time and space. Clichys seen this time and again when teams play such tactics against us, yet in the end the same result, under pressure he switched off, even with help around him.

He really is one of a handful of players that doesn’t have to be utilised elsewhere on the pitch within our squad, he is always there at left wingback, by now he should be beyond specialized for that position, he can’t hide behind youth or inexperience as an excuse like others in the squad, 24-25 years old this is and should be his prime, he must have well in excess of 200 caps for Arsenal. Every player on the planet makes mistakes, yet those who go on to become the best and end their careers with medals galore learn from them, adapt their game over the ever changing cycle of football during their careers.

A real shame, off the pitch Clichy is about as professional as can be asked of a modern day footballer, his on the field & game time’s lack of concentration might forever cost us as long as he remains first choice, Arsenal cannot afford such liabilities.

It is fairly incredible that he seems to get caught out in the same manner over and over - I know it's easy to say from the sidelines but wouldn't it have been so much simpler and more effective to just boot that ball out of play instead of making some sloppy attempt to get the ball back off Srna?

And that changes how well he played against WHU, how? But, do what you gotta do. I'll be here.
Is the pass mark so low for gael that we'll applaud him when he doesn't make mistakes? He has pretty average and so was song.
He's a mistake a game kind of player. Sometimes he makes huge mistakes, seemingly more often than most of his team mates. He's a liability plain and simple. Birmingham 08?

Looked like he was trying to shepard the ball out of play but he wasn't in the right position to do it.

Real shame Gibbs is soooo weak and brittle, I could see him really excelling with a run of games in the League.

I never said - his brain freezes are poor and should not be excused. They are very obvious, however, and thus easy to criticise.

And **** right off with B'ham.

I always look back at that game as a defining moment where Gaels game changed from dependable to error prone. He's made a very similar tackles after that game, almost always resulting in penalties.
He stops when he shouldn't. He is too easily beaten by his marker. Gets caught out of position way too much. Hes just not good enough. Compared to sagna, he's a big defensive liability.

As someone mentioned earlier, Clichy's position is somehow unchallenged. He may have been fantastic in the past. Nowadays he is a liability. He needs to learn a few things from Sagna. A player is judged based on his last performance, and therefore, Clichy is awful lately. Plain and simple. Seriously, do you think Clichy will start in Chelski or MU?

Clichy's major **** ups aren't due to lack of cover. It's the simple one on ones, the stupid passes near our area, dwelling too long on the ball, refusing to clear etc etc that he messes up and lead to the chances.
