Huge difference between beating a team on a night and being consistent throughout the league... Over 38 games in the more important trophy, who was the better??? Don't make me remind you of the points difference.
:) You're not wrong there mate. To win over 38 games your team has to maintain a fitness level all season long. Something we can't manage. Come January the whole midfield was missing.

When the cup final came the whole defence was missing. But we were lucky because it caused Mertersaker to come in and take charge. Something we've missed all season. His aerial dominance and anticipation were spot on. Two young fast CBs either side can offset his speed problems. Wenger's tactics were perfect too and add to that Ramsey on a purple patch (a rarity) and Xhaka finally settled.

Apart from Loftus Cheek, did Chelsea have a single injury all season?

But you must admit there is something wrong at the club that we can use this as an excuse. Because I won't deny we have horrible injury luck but I don't believe it is just down to luck. What are we doing/ not doing to have this situation every season. Becoming ridiculous now. Nobody has that much bad luck. We're doing something wrong here!

We've got Shad and a full medical team. Fantastic new facilities. And this year Wenger brought in Dr Ceri Evans the psychiatrist who helped the All Blacks rugby team. Not much more a manager can do . . . except maybe sell players that are injury prone. Seeing Ramsey against Chelsea, it must be tempting to see if his purple patch can cotinue! 'No Wenger, sell him and Ox and Walcott. Enough is enough!'

Sturridge . . . . can any medical team get him fit? If it's in your genes . . well!

But that is just it. Persisting with players who constantly break down is one of the major points for WOB...

I can remember having a conversation in 2009 about our poor injury record. That is 8 year ago man. Bad luck doesn't last that long. Merely suggesting it is ludicrous IMHO. But of course you are entitled to yours.

Anyway, maybe this coming season our 'luck' changes on that front. I truly hope so.
I hope the season is flawless in terms of injury, ref decisions and game changing tactics (time wasting etc)
I want the perfect season for Arsène for two main reasons. So that he either proves all the WOBs completely and hopelessly wrong. Or the opposite. We need some clarity on why things are not working at AFC. We had the platform to propel forward from but it feels like we have not done that.

Anyway, I am not into doom porn on AFC now. I just want a good summer and football to start again. As bad as that seaosn was, I miss it already.

Our injuries defy logic. Was thinking of getting it featured on an 'unexplained phenomenon' science website, along with some of NASA's stuff and why whales commit ****.

Back to squad cost. All those teams with squads over £200m finished in the top 6. Man U, City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Sp**s. As squad cost predicts.

Now rearrange those top spending teams by days lost to injury.
Chelsea 877
Sp**s 1029
City 1153
United 1262
Arsenal 1573
Liverpool 1840

Uncannily close to their finishing positions.

To win this league you need to spend for quality and then be injury free for consistency, two important factors.

Arsenal cannot win the league spending fourth and having injury prone players over 38 games as well. Anybody voting 1st is deluded unless we ship out some players and bring in some new ones.

can you find data on days lost for the same 6 teams in previous seasons? i'm wondering if the relationship holds.

Did that last year and it brought down a **** storm.

If I remember correctly you did standard linear regression model or was that some other poster? Did you test the assumptions and how did you reduced them to weaker form if for example homoscedasticy didn't apply?
