I’ve seen more cases of that backfiring than paying off long term unless it’s a low skilled player who’s aware of their short comings.

Havertz is a recent case in point, his versatility has stalled his development from Leverkusen. Unless Vieira is way more talented than we imagined I think it’s unlikely he overtakes Maddison.
He’s got a little bit of that Bernardo Silva/Iniesta talent that allows them to work in the spaces right across the final third. I think he’ll get a lot of appearances this season, albeit mostly coming off the bench.

I also see all that happening, I just don't see how he overtakes a specialist with years over him but fair dos.

We're much better than them, but we'll probably make it very hard on ourselves again. Often we are our own worst enemy.

A draw or narrow victory at best.

I am unsure Fabio ever reaches Maddison’s level mostly due to the minutes he gets (the lack there of). Gets moved about a bit too.

Guys like Rice and Maddison have been solid in the Prem for years before they jumped up.
I think Fabio has more on his game than Maddison. Better vision and spatial awareness.

Maddison is further along in his development. But like you said, if Vieira gets consistent game time, he might surpass him.

No doubt about it we must really put a marker down in this one. Jesus must start as well.

Most interesting NL derby since the CL decider. Less on the line at this stage so looking forward to it more. Very interested to see how Sp**s are able to cope given they will be attacking us and also interested to see if we can repeat Wednesday night. If so, it will really be another big marker not to attempt to go toe to toe at the emirates.

Hmmm, everybody is so convinced that Tottenham will come at us. Every pundit etc has been openly and confidently stating this.

The scenes if they're wrong 🤔

I hope Mikel has all bases covered.

In this case, when we say he’s further along in his development are we just saying he has more games under his belt? Also, does surpass refer to ability or what has been achieved in their career so far?

What a quote he came up with during an interview this week..

He’s got a bit of Romario in him when he is in the penalty box. Quick feet and the ability to manipulate the ball like he’s playing on the beach in Rio.

A lot of comparing of Maddison to Kai in another thread. It made me think of those that wanted him over Ødegaard once upon a time.

For me, the question is, after what we’re starting to see from Vieira, would you want James over Fabio? He’s 3 and a half years older and cost about £5m more.
Here you also have to consider Vieira's wages compared to Maddison's. The payment is likely over a longer time period. Both help with FFP.

The problem is sometimes also to convince a player to come to battle for his place, when there is other top club where he becomes the star man, and plays all the games.

I doubt Maddison would choose Vieira role over going to Tottenham. It's not realistic at all.

I think it’s fair. When he was at Marinos, I rarely remember when he actually deviated from his philosophy. Same thing with his time at Celtic whenever I watched their derbies. Even against Real Madrid they were still balling and going toe to toe with Modric, Kroos etc with inferior players.

Will be interesting how they set up but I think we’ll win this. At the carpet, we’re different gravy.

I’m going for a 3-0.

Arsenal Quotes

Right from his very first match, when Patrick Vieira was as yet unknown to the English public, he showed just how talented he was. No one disputed his ability, and he gave me the credibility and the hold over the club that I needed to take it in the direction I wanted. He and Emmanuel Petit became a duo that would remain forever etched in the memories of Arsenal fans.
