Bolton v Southampton ( from a Bolton point of view )

As most of you know now, Bolton won 1-0 v Southampton in the quarter final of the carling cup and look on course to meet the Arsenal kids in the semi or maybe the final ( slappy decided to go early to Bolton to watch this game and stay up North for the league game on Saturday ). Most of the players who'll play v Arsenal on Saturday were in force, the only player given a total break from this game was Per Frandsen

Atmosphere inside the ground was great one hour before kick off. Saints fans were in their numbers participating to the crowd

Bolton started with:-
Poole

Hunt N'Gotty Charlton Gardner

Stelios Ba Campo Pedersen

Davies Okocha

Southamton had Le Saux, Beattie and Lundekvam missing from their line up

The first half saw Bolton attacking right from the kick off with Ba going close and Okocha driving a freekick through the wall. Southamton had a few good breaks but in the end, Delgado was always running offside which helped Bolton as the attacks looked really threating. Close to half time, Pedersen had a good chance when through and was brought down but the referee did not give a penalty even though it was a blatant trip

Half time = Bolton 0 0 Southampton

Second half started very quietly. There were not many chances in the first 20 minutes of the half as all the chances were long range efforts which were blocked. Southampton brought on Marsden and Neil McCann to try get on top. However, this didnt work for them as Stelios Giannakopoulos and Pedersen were hurting them down the wings but the final product was lacking.

On the 70th minute, Allardyce made a sub which we thought was going to hurt Bolton's attacking play. He brought on Jardel for Davies. I know Jardel has won the european golden boot twice but he looks like Gazza's mate 5 bellies. He was scared of going for a header with the defender and when he runs, he his arms tucked in by his side and with his belly sticking out... in other words, he runs like a poofter.

The last 10 minutes of the half were interesting as it was end to end with both clubs throwing their fullbacks forward to help attack and there were plenty of great chances. In the 93rd minute, Southampton had a corner which was delivered perfectly by Dodd which was headed towards goal until Gardner cleared off the line

Full time = Bolton 0 - 0 Southampton

Quite a few fans were leaving as they thought it was going to be a replay so they all headed for the exit until the PA system said there will be 30 mins of extra time so they all came back which brought a cheer to most of us

In extra time, Djorkaeff came on and it seemed to gee up Wanderers. He had a hand in creating 3 chances for Jardel, Charlton and Pedersen to score but their shots were weak.

Second period of extra time began with a flurry of attacks from Southampton but there was no end product as Saints clearly showed they missed Beattie and Phillips.
However, a back injury to Nicky Hunt turned the game as Anthony Barness came on in his place. Within a minute, Pedersen made his customary run on the left wing (as he did when he made John Terry score an og to send Arsenal top) but this time there was a touch from Dodd who concede the corner. Okocha had been taking most of the corners but he left this one for Djorkaeff who hit a long cross towards the corner of the 18 yard box where Barness was waiting to volley a ball back towards goal but it looked like it as going wide until Pedersen stuck out a foot and the ball went into the net

GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL

With Only 5 minutes to go, Southampton threw the kitchen sink and almost drew level when Telfer got the ball and decided to put his foot through the ball but Poole got a fingertip to push it onto the bar and the ball was cleared for a throw in on the line at which time the referee decided enough was enough and put us supporters who had to endure two hours in the cold out of our misery

Final Score = Bolton 1 - 0 Southampton

HERE'S A RATING LIST OF THE BOLTON PLAYERS

Poole 8 - Did really well with crosses and made a few good stops

Hunt 7 - Worked very hard in defending his side but was often overrun by Pahars and Higginbottom. Had a few long range shots which stung Niemi's hands. Booked

Charlton 8 - Had a solid game and kept Ormerod in his back pocket. Made a few good tackles when the saints were rampaging down the right

N'Gotty 6 - Had an ordinary game making quite a few erros and had to be helped out by the keeper. I hope Henry was watching

Gardner 9 - Superb. Bambi on ice had a storming game from start to finish putting in some slide tackles when the strikers were through, three goal line clearances and had time to run rings round saints right back

Stelios 7 - Tried his best but was given problems by Higginbottom. Didnt help track back and left Hunt exposed too many times. Booked

Campo 5 - Poor Poor Poor. Goes down when u blow in his direction, cant pass the ball properly and decides to play with the ball outside his own area. Booked

Ibrahim Ba 7 - not played many games but looks really good in centre midfield. He's huge so there is no messing with him. I dont think he will play v Arsenal so nothing to worry about. Booked

Okocha 7 - Was good in the 1st half as he ran the show but faded out in the second and looked too tired to run in extra time

Pedersen 8 - He's a victim of the boo boys but gave his all and had plenty of chances, one criticism is that once he gets past a man, he doesnt know what to do next

Davies 6 - Very ordinary game but to be fair.. Svenson is good in the air and beat him many times. Cygan is in for a bit of a rough ride though on Saturday and i hope he is ready

Subs:-

Jardel 3 - He's ok against Walsall and other lower league teams but against premier opposition, he makes Bolton look like a 10 man team

Djorkaeff 10 - Only played 30 mins but he was pure quality. Threaded many decent through ball and got counter-attacks going. He's really going to be a handful on Saturday but i hope he has an off day

Barness 7 - Solid in defence and didnt let anyone past him. Set up the goal which was pleasing.
