Arteta does not need to "say" anything.Arteta doesn't have a problem with him.

Message already sent by starting Trossard and Kai as striker.
Let's see if Eddie wil start tonight or not.
then it depends how people defining "back up".There is nothing to say.
Eddie is not a starter. He is the backup.
Arteta has played him accordingly.
If people are mad about the backup: Find a better backup who is starter-quality happy with being a backup and not playing.
Plenty of those guys are around apparently.

I mean City have Alvarez and Liverpool have Jota/Nunez/Gakpo and all of those are much better
Part of our recent match winning success has been been via using fresh subs, the quality drops but you get energy. This game for whatever reason Arteta did not do that and didn't release Eddie, Nelson etc. Was it tiredness that brought on the lack of concentration at the very end?
He’s still a ****e backup though. On the wages he’s on it shouldn’t be unreasonable to think he could be a contender for a starting place here. Unfortunately he does nothing other than statpad whatever mediocre stats he has against the likes of Sheffield United whilst being happy to sit on the bench. Offers nothing against any semi-decent opposition. There is nothing to say.

Otherwise good post, but a couple things I have to mention.Having said that, Eddie is a hard worker and its not his fault he doesn't have the talent required at PL level, its on Arteta that he kept giving minutes instead of prioritising a striker signing or even preferring Trossard and Havertz ahead of him much earlier than he did in the season.
for tactical reason, it is difficult for him to just come from the bench and then "perform".You're fine with having a backup striker not being able to impact games, have a bad first touch, only foul opposition players whenever he comes on, while collecting 100k/week? Where's your standards?

as some said here, nowadays he only play when the game is "done", which means we already pulling our handbrakes, taking starters off and not interested in scoring more.
Our defense won't push up, and we will mainly keep possession of the ball.
we put him in just to keep the formation and need a striker there; and his teammates at that moment mostly are just subs and not like Saka/Martinelli doing their best.
in the end, it all depends on how Arteta sees Eddie and how he rotates the player.Alright, this happened recently you know, after Dubai, before he's started crucial games in absence of Jesus. But alright, thats his role then nowadays, we can agree on that. Do you still think we should be paying 100k/week for him to come run around when we try hold possession? A job btw I don't even think he's good at, the only thing he does is running into people, making stupid fouls.
Pretty sure players like Toney and Gyokeres are fine to come and try to take the starting striker role from Havertz/Jesus. And Sesko or Zirkzee. However with the shortage in the striker market and lack of natural standout 1st choice options finding reliable players who are ok in rotation may not be easy.
Someone said it, but Nketiah often plays without a few of the starting players. But of course he also plays against tired opposition. An issue with Eddie in this role is he hasn't got a great record of scoring from the bench as an impact sub.
