League is very weak
So what's the deal here, Wenger again saying he's worried about a setback?

I was thinking Sanchez will start.

If Wenger is worried about a setback then he obviously isn't 100%. You can't be 100% fit and have a fear of a setback, otherwise we'd be afraid of a setback for every player recovering from injury, even if they're perfectly recovered.

Rofl, the hell you can't

Furthermore, if you've read what Wenger actually said, you'd find that he said the following.

The scans are clear of any injury, which means the MRI shows no edema, or other abnormalities.

His performance in terms of getting back to his prior fitness benchmarks is fine.

He's gone through training fine with no setbacks and definitely no unexpected soreness or tightness.

But he's also reticent to play him in an intense game because losing him would be problematic for the rest of our season.

Also, hamstring injuries, especially high grade injuries often recur even when all diagnostic and prognostic measures say the player is fit.

See Costa over the last 2 years or Cesc for literally ever or Aaron just last season.

Then when do we play him? If he's "fully fit" but at risk of a setback then he'll still be at risk of a setback next week, and the week after. In that case anybody can be at risk of a "setback", its simply called an injury risk.

There's either a reason for him being at risk of a setback or there's not. You talk about Costa etc. but I guarantee you there was an underlying reason. It he isn't " match fit" (which seems to be what AW is saying) then that's performance related, not injury risk related. Maybe he doesn't want to play him because he isn't up to match sharpness, not because he's afraid he'll get injured. He's hardly going to say that Alexis isn't looking as sharp as usual in training though, is he.

We simply don't have the diagnostic tools required to proclaim with 100% certainty that any player is match fit. Or fully fit for that matter. Ever diagnostic test that you've ever taken in your life has a false positive rate. Sometimes you'll *seem* healthy but be 2 months away from dying.

Similar thing here. It's not just injury risk and/or just short of match fitness, it's that they don't know if he'll get reinjured in the same area despite passing all the tests.

Watched some highlights of Alexis, and it's quite scary how quickly he and Theo could attack together. Those 2 can really open teams up. Hopefully we'll see some more of that soon!

Miss this chap a lot...

Messi returned from his 2 month injury against Real as a sub. Wenger isn't going to start him at his first game after so much time out. Hopefully he'll get 20 minutes, whatever the result is.

I guess Kompany's situation may be a factor here. He was also deemed 100% fit but certainly wasn't like that as he came as a substitute and got injured few minutes later. Not hamstring of course but still a muscular injury.

From the psychological perspective I think it's better to have him labelled 'probably fit for next game' than 'out indefinitely'.

Don't agree. If we are winning, there's no need to play Alexis, not against these butchers.

Well if he passes all the tests available to us (which I'd imagine is pretty much all testing needed) with flying colours then he's 100% according to what we have available, and you have to trust that. You don't just give him another week off for the sake of it. It sounds to me like Alexis isn't 'match sharp' (ie. he isn't training as well as he would be when he's playing - Wenger mentioned the intensity of a match compared to training). If we worried about false test results then we wouldn't play anyone out of fear of a setback.

Arsenal Quotes

I want a fan to wake up in the morning and say, “Arsenal are playing today, I’m going to have a good time.” That guy starts his day off by thinking that something good is going to happen to him. And to do that, big clubs like Arsenal have to have the ambition to play spectacularly. Of shared happiness.
