Too late given he's already led to 2 apologies to us costing us at least 2 and possibly 5 points this year, but FINALLY some accountability at PGMOL. Howard Webb is making his mark now he's been in post a while. About time someone shook up the refs as too many incompetents from Greater Manchester have been allowed to cruise through mistake after mistake.

The PL have the money, why don't they just go head hunting the best referees from across the globe and offer them a salary they can't refuse, as opposed to keeping it as a job for the boys network based out greater manchester. Its weird. The clubs have invested so much to get the best players and managers, but officiating remains amateur hour. Also, I don't necessarily think referees make the best VAR officials, make that a specialised position also.

All of this means very little if another Manc referee comes in and butchers the game. We need diversity, and I don’t mean black or brown refs. I mean diversity of ideas. Maybe we should look to bring in foreign refs. We have foreign coaches and players, but we can’t have foreign refs. Competition from abroad will force the PGMOL to up their standards. No one outside the PL respects English refs and there’s a good reason for that. They suck. How many English refs made it to Qatar? It wasn’t many.

I surprised they haven't, they have so much money. I know nothing about PGMOL so could be way off, but wonder if it kind of has a similar influence to a labour union, where because those running it are almost all British, it advocates for British referees and influences the PL in keeping officiating jobs to be British.

Just looked up the annual salary of a premier league referee, it's between 38k and 42k pounds. They are give an extra 1k pound for each PL match they are put in charge of, so the top ones can potentially make 70k pounds. Thats not a great salary given the profile of the Premier League, its an extremely high pressure / difficult job and you are consider to be at the pinnacle of your profession. Should be at least double that; might then start seeing some competition and diversity in refereeing ranks.

UEFA is not gonna allow this and good reason imo

They do have a retainer on top of that. Probably takes them north of 100k. Being involved in football in some capacity is a dream job for many, I don’t see higher salary improving candidates.

It’s a closed shop and that’s how they want it.
