Arsène never bought players, managers say the profile of player they want and it’s up to the scouts and executive guys to get them. This was on the scouting team.
Come on. Prior to Sven turning it was pretty evident Wenger was heavily involved in identifying and buying players. As @American_Gooner says there has never been any evidence to prove otherwise.

I also remember Wenger at a press conference was asked about Arsenal needing a director of football and he said if there was someone to help do negotiations that would be fine but he preferred total control over footballing matters.

It was pretty much a known fact that Wenger ran Arsenal in all aspects before that.

Steady man you’re talking to guys who actually believed the narrative that Wenger did absolutely everything including making the tea and servicing the players wives.
Sure. Wenger didn't have any responsibility as a manager and yet apparently the best manager in the league. Specially when it came down to the poor decisions it was never his responsibility.

Who was the last player to leave us, that you cried over?
Not sure I cried over it but RVP. He was an Arsenal man through and through. The best player in the league by some distance. Best captain we've had since I don't know how long. Was pretty sure we weren't getting a similar caliber of player for a long time.

To be assigned the shirt #67, apparently. Requested #10 but it cannot be changed during the season as per league rules.

Before it happens and everyone here is mindboggled about it, 67 is the plate number of the city of Zonguldak, which is where Özil's grandparents are from, and it's popular among Turkish footballers to pick the plate number of their city of birth as their squad number.

Nice touch. Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware of that tradition :)

The best you'll get in England is a young lad trying to get the number 69

The super lig is such a huge drop in class that it’s actually a tad embarrassing. It’s only for the fact that it’s a sort of homecoming that makes it acceptable for a player of his years and talent to play there. He could retire, eat burgers for five years, come out of retirement and still stand out over there. I hope and expect him to have the end of career that his talent deserves.

Süper Lig is pretty bad, and it's also horribly corrupt like most institutions in Turkey currently are, but that's an overstatement. It's not an MLS or Qatar. Plenty of previously world class, or at least very good, players haven't amounted to anything in the Süper Lig. Robin van Persie, for example, moved to Fenerbahçe after leaving United and he was nothing special. Radamel Falcao has been very pedestrian for Galatasaray the last two seasons, etc.

It definitely requires a sense of commitment from the player still. If you get that, then yes, previously elite players do make a massive difference even when way past their prime, like Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto'o, Demba Ba or Papiss Cissé. Özil might do well in that regard, because he'll be playing for his boyhood club.

Arsenal Quotes

The coach's role is to make the player understand everything that serves the interest of the game. To do this he must speak to the child within each player, to the adolescent he was and the adult he is now. Too often a coach tends only to speak to the adult, issuing commands for performance, for victory, for reflection, to the detriment of the child who is playing for pleasure, living in the present.
