but Holding’s hair transplant was painless
Barcelona getting in Jesus and Garcia in a deal which saw Messi leave the club would actually be a rare bit of great business. Yes, Messi is incredible, but they are going to have to start thinking about life after him, so why not start now?

Dembele, Greizmann, Fati, Coutinho and Jesus isn't exactly weak is it? Pjanic, Busquets and DeJong in midfield is Champions League and they have Ter Stegen in goal with some good defenders.

Let's be real though, Messi is staying.

Why would Messi be free?

Clause in his contract. From what I gather, Barca says he had to activate it before june 10th, but covid delayed the end of the season to August so Messi's side think it's still valid.

He has a clause in his contract, that voids the contract...sounds like something Ivan Gazidis would stupidly put in

Probably feels that he's earned it but at the same time when they allowed it to be put they probably just guessed it'd never be used. Think Messi has earned the right to decide when to leave tho.

I actually think more clubs can afford Messi's wages than we think. Just imagine the boost in merch, sponsoring, etc.
This guy's gonna get you a whole new fanbase tbh.

Reaction is crazy, social media gone wild ever since the news dropped, even other sports are talking about it.

Because a clause in his contract States that he can leave for free before June this year. But due to the season not ending in June, Messi is claiming he has grounds for leaving after june.

At the time, it was one of the conditions that his Entourage stipulated as the the conditions of Messi signing

If Messi is trying to do this, what a scumbag thing to do to the club that made you really...I don't care for Barca, but they gave everything to Messi...first time since he has been there that **** really hits the fan and he wants to leave for free, what a little ****.

Don't have a problem with him leaving, but wanting to cancel your contract so that your team gets nothing for the best player of all time, sounds horrible to me.
Well, he wants to test himself in England.

Isn't that what a lot fans have been saying?

Barca only have themselves to blame.. Agreed to the clause assuming it would never be used.

Barca fans aren't even blaming Messi. He's been incredibly loyal, Barca only have themselves to blame for how horrendously they've been run. Messi doesn't owe them a thing.

Wouldn't say incredibly loyal...this is like the first time they aren't great since he has been there, then he immediately wants to leave

Think he has earned a move as you say, but wanting to cancel your contract is kind of a **** thing to do imo.

It's not clear cut. If the date is a specific date, not linked to the end of the season I don't think he's got a good case.

What it will do is muddy the waters. I think he will go for a fee. Something in the 70-100m is probably fair. He may take a cut on his wages to make it happen. (Or city will just drop the money off to his account in the Cayman islands in a barge so as to keep it off the books like they did with Mancini).

If Barcelona get him off the books for 70-100m it will facilitate their rebuild. In truth they need a proper rake ran through their squad. They can't win the UCL in the three years or so Messi has left. So it's arguably in everyone's best interests.

He'll pop up at City into another ageing squad. Win them a UCL and we'll be able to laugh that Fraudiola cannot win a UCL without Messi

It genuinely baffles me how poorly ran Barcelona are.

If you take care of your academy players when it’s that good and don’t chase big names like your Real Madrid they’d be better off financially and ability wise.

First huge mistake was choosing Fabregas over Thiago so he was happy to leave when he wouldn’t renegotiate and his clause was matched. Letting Dani Alves walk was criminal as well.

Olmo and Traore would have been great squad options if not starters. Instead they’ve pursued old players for huge money over the past five years that don’t fit the system and make no sense.

Often have squads with only 17/18 senior players. It’s not hard to build a squad around Messi, you need pace and hard workers in the front line around him as well as a midfield who can press and move the ball quickly.

How do you f*ck that up?

There's a clause that allows him to do it tho. Barca obviously agreed to it. Also Barca have been spending recklessly and have been on a decline for 5 years now. Their supporters and Messi himself have watched Real win the CL 3 times since then and they've only been to the semis once in that time. They let Neymar go without really replacing him, made loads of poor signings. Messi clearly feels that if he's to win the CL again for example he has to move to a team with more ambition. He's been there 20 years. He's given them so much. They only had 1 CL prior to him now they have 5 and enjoyed a sustained period of dominance over their rivals. Like I said the fans aren't blaming Messi at all, even most of them feel he's earned the right.

They got too successful and forgot about what it was all built on.

I agree that if he wants a new challenge, he has earned it as it's now or never really for him...just think demanding a clause that allows him to leave a team that gave him hormones so he could play top flight football, is a bit of a **** thing to do..

Would say he helped them to 3 Champions Leagues, 2006 was Ronnie's team, Messi hadn't quite arrived then.

The biggest things in life have been achieved by people who, at the start, we would have judged crazy. And yet if they had not had these crazy ideas the world would have been more stupid.
