West Ham: Kings of Europe

Considering the Boleyn Ground is 35,000, even though West Ham will get an increase of 20,000, they won't generate enough money to compete on an elite level. I think their highest season ticket price is £900 and their cheapest is £500. Our cheapest is like £1000; and even though Man United, Man City and Chelsea don't charge as much as we do for tickets, they have extensive resources regardless of their matchday revenue.

In this league, money talks; and West Ham don't have enough of it to make a dent. The only way they climb into the Top Four is if they make exceptional signings and somehow continually overcome one of the teams that will go out and spend £200m to oust them the next season. Or, sell to a billionaire who will do that themselves.

For anyone outside the top4 the battle is now to aim for the 5th spot while hoping one of the top 4 flop. City and Liverpool spend allot of money but buy dross and it will catch up to both of them, especially City who have an old squad with few HG players. Then there's us, who nearly always have half a season of garbage and 1 of these years it could last a season. United and Chelsea look to be stacking too many decent players to flop but you never know.

Dok's boys win comfortably at home against an Andorran side. 35K (a full house) watch the game. The two Davids will be licking their chops at that.

Can't believe Europa League is already started. That was what, like a 5 week break for West Ham?

And it means when we face West Ham in opening day fixture, they're sharper and match fit, new manager could cause us few headaches.

Hmm yeah we'll need to be really prepared. We've struggled in our opening matches in recent seasons as it is.

If they go through they play on a Thursday and then they face us on the weekend. They'll have more rhythm, but we'll be fresh, especially if they have play an away game somewhere in eastern Europe.

West Ham? Imagine a universe in which they win the league, and LFC is still on their drought...

too soon for them to really challenge for Top 4 but they have been making some astute signings this summer and last and they could definitely challenge Tottenham, Liverpool and Everton for EL spots.

West Ham in a real European dogfight here. 1-0 down & 1 man down vs the Maltese Birkirkara FC. The Maltese are using all their nous & their knowledge of the dark arts and West Ham are not handling it with the required attitude. I hope they come back but wouldn't be surprised if they lose another to a red card.

Tomkins was unfairly sent off but you could sense it was coming as West Ham haven't acclimatized to the special conditions that teams encounter in these tricky European away ties.

Bilic has a big task on his hands here and it will be an extremely embarrassing loss if they don't get through & a big dent to his reputation even before the season has properly started. West Ham have looked shaky at the back, something you'd never say about a Big Sam team......hmmm

They type of game where you really worry about the officiating & whether anything corrupt is in play.

The Maltese are looking the more dangerous team actually. Bilic & West Ham need something to go their way now.

Hammers being smart here. Crashing out early from the Europa League is the way to go. Dented egos but better for them in the long run.

They have zero chance of breaking into the top 4 anytime soon.

But they could definitely establish themselves as a top 10 team.

Professional pride must be in there somewhere-West Ham haven't been in Europe in ages, I'm sure they don't want to crash & burn against some Maltese side.

Never understood the wanting to exit the EL as soon as possible attitude. These teams in the PL which have their main target as 'try and achieve European football'- and then when they get it, they seemingly don't give a **** about the competition because it's the Europa League, 'Who cares'..

Do these lesser teams in the premier league who strive to get European football only do so for financial gain or what? It's a shame that the attitude of English teams and their fans towards the competition is so lackadaisical. The EL seems to have no pedigree nowadays.

The match will be shown on Match of the Day later this evening and if you don't want to know the result look away now as we show you Tony Adams lifting the cup for Arsenal.
